The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is on the northern half of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia, bordering China to the north, with Russia to the northeast and with a total area of 123,000 square kilometers, and 17,300 km of coastline.

It has a monsoon climate at the temperate zone. The country has one municipal area under Central Government administration, two special administrative cities and nine prefectures. Pyongyang is its capital and its national anthem is “Aegukga”.

The DPRK has a population of 24.05 million (2008 census), and its language is Korean. It has abundant natural resources, with more than 300 known minerals, among which its proven reserves graphite and magnesite proven reserves rank first in the world. The country is rich in nonferrous metals, such as iron, aluminum, zinc, copper, and silver, and nonmetallic minerals, including coal, limestone, mica, and asbestos.

It also boasts abundant hydropower and forest resources. Its major industries are mining, electric power, machinery, metallurgy, chemicals and textiles, and its agriculture is mainly based on rice and maize.
